Project Goal
Design a hands-free system that helps musicians boost income, gather reviews, and capture contact details for more consistent bookings.
Challenge
Musicians rely heavily on word-of-mouth for reviews and follow-ups, but their attention is focused on performing. With limited time and occupied hands, opportunities to connect with enthusiastic audience members often vanish before meaningful engagement or future bookings can occur.
Solution
The solution was a mobile-first web application that gives musicians a hands-free way to connect with their audience during live performances.
Through a simple QR code, listeners can access the performer’s digital songlist, browse the repertoire, and submit live song requests. Once a request is played, the audience is prompted to leave a tip or review — turning engagement into meaningful support.
For musicians, SetLink provides a personal dashboard to organise setlists for upcoming gigs, store their full repertoire, and manage audience interactions — all supporting the flow of the performance.
Outcome
While the prototype was tested only in live pilot settings, the concept demonstrated strong potential to enhance both the performer and audience experience.
Early feedback suggested that SetLink could:
Increase income per performance through integrated tipping.
Encourage more audience reviews and repeat bookings.
Strengthen the performer–audience relationship by transforming passive listeners into active participants.
In essence, SetLink represents a step toward a more sustainable live music model — one where technology supports connection, rather than distracting from it.
Learning
As my first UX project, SetLink was a formative experience that bridged my background as a performing musician with the structured process of user experience design.
Through this project, I learned the importance of living as the user — experiencing firsthand the challenges, limitations, and emotions of a performer on stage. That perspective shaped every design decision and deepened my understanding of user empathy.
Working through the design thinking framework step by step — from defining the problem to testing the prototype — taught me the value of not skipping stages. Each phase revealed new insights, helping me uncover the real issue: musicians are fully occupied performing and need a hands-free assistant to manage audience interactions.
Finally, this project strengthened my ability to communicate research findings, structure case studies, and translate personal experience into a validated design process.
